Trauma

Raj treats all fractures, tendon and ligament injuries sustained to the forearm, wrist and hand. Whether they require operative treatments in the form of fracture fixation, soft tissue repair, reconstruction or physiotherapy.

Raj works closely with specialist upper limb physiotherapists for rehabilitation after injury and post-operative care to ensure all treatments have the best possible outcome.

Sports injuries

Raj treats both amateur and professional sportspeople. He is the preferred hand and wrist surgeon to many professional teams in Bristol and the southwest.

He has special interests in sports injury prevention and has published the largest cricket injury prevention study in the world. Furthermore, Raj is a member of the Football Medicine and Performance Association and has published articles on hand and wrist injuries and treatments in goalkeepers.

Raj understands the importance of sport not only in the professional but amateur player as well. He aims to give the best advice and treatments for an early return to playing sport.

Degenerative conditions

A host of degenerative conditions can afflict the joints, tendons and ligaments of the hand and wrist. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and tendonitis are the commonest conditions. The clinic offers joint replacement, fusions, wrist arthroscopy and tendon reconstructions.

Raj tailors the treatment to the individual. He examines, investigates and fully discusses all options before making a treatment plan that is agreeable to the patient.

Nerve damage

Carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome are two of the commonest conditions that present to the clinic. These are often easily diagnosed by history and examination. However, sometimes nerve conduction studies are required to help with diagnosis.

Steroid injections can be helpful for carpal tunnel but symptoms tend to recur. Surgery for carpal tunnel has one of the most successful outcomes of all elective operations.

Common procedures

A range of other conditions can cause pain, dysfunction, stiffness and swellings in the hand and wrist.

Some of the commonest are:

  • Dupuytren’s contracture
  • Trigger finger
  • Ganglion cyst
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfers elbow

Raj is happy to see all patients and to discuss options whether surgical or conservative in the form of therapy and steroid injection. Sometimes reassurance is all that is required.
